Fascinated by Yukichi Fukuzawa’s saying, "Heaven does not create a man above or below another man," I entered Keio University’s Faculty of Law, where I encountered the words of Ulpianus: "Justice is the constant and perpetual desire to give to every one that to which he is entitled. The precepts of the law are the following: to live honorably, to injure no one, to give to every one his due.” So what is justice in the international community? What is the role of law? Those are issues I continue to consider and learn about every day. International law covers a wide range of areas, including armed conflict, disarmament, security, and conflict resolution in addition to territorial, maritime, space, environmental, and human rights. I look forward to learning more about the world with you here at the Faculty of Law.

My research focuses on Japanese legal history, an area that may be somewhat unfamiliar to most of you. Why are certain laws needed or no longer needed in a given time period? What changes and what remains the same as a result of those laws? The Japanese legal system in particular has been strongly influenced and shaped by cross-cultural influences and foreign law, from the ancient Ritsuryo system to the present day. This background paints a unique historical picture of Japanese law, and, at the same time, gives us insights into how the Japanese way of thinking about law has been shaped over time. I invite you to join us in exploring the history of the law, which is still alive and well today.

As a graduate of another university, I feel that the Keio University Faculty of Law is defined by unique (and perhaps eccentric) professors and extremely curious and proactive students. I am in charge of teaching Spanish, but I may be slightly strange among the academic faculty at Keio, having only spent one week in Spain. Instead, I have traveled many times to Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean. I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find that there are plenty of curious law students who are interested in exploring Mexico and Guatemala with me. That’s the beauty of the Keio Faculty of Law. So come and join us!
